The start of a new school year can be overwhelming for students and parents alike. From adjusting to new schedules to managing academic and extracurricular expectations, stress often builds before the first bell even rings. At Fair Chance Initiative, we recognize the importance of mental well-being during these transitions, which is why we hosted Letter to Your Future Self over Family Long Weekend.
This activity invited students to write letters to themselves at the beginning of the next school year, offering encouragement, reminders of their strengths, and hopes for the future. Parents also had the opportunity to write letters to their children, sharing words of support and reassurance that they’ll receive just when they need them most.
By reflecting on their goals, worries, and aspirations now, participants created a moment of self-compassion and motivation for the future. We hope that when these letters are opened next fall, they will serve as a comforting reminder that they’ve already faced challenges before—and overcome them.
Through initiatives like this, we strive to make mental health a priority in our community, especially during times of high stress. As we continue planning events and resources to support students and families, we encourage everyone to take small steps in prioritizing self-care and mindfulness.
Stay tuned for more upcoming events, and remember: your future self will thank you for the kindness you show today.
